Notice on Course Registration COMMUNICATION ACROSS CULTURES General Selective Course

SHORT DESCRIPTION

A four-week program to facilitate in-depth learning and understanding of intercultural communication by interpreting the fundamental theories of the broad spectrum of cultural transmission. Students can further improve their knowledge of different cultures to deepen their interest in intercultural communication. Then engage in foreign affairs for students and consciously apply intercultural communication theories in foreign exchanges practice. Through this course, students will familiarize themselves with the main approaches and methods of cross-cultural communication and master the basic theoretical concepts of cross-cultural communication, and adapt to the intercultural environment when getting involved in the world.


PURPOSE

· Master the definitions and characteristics of culture, communication, and cross-cultural communication.

· Understand the various factors affecting cross-cultural communication activities.

· Understand the approaches of intercultural communication and research methods of intercultural communication.

· Have a preliminary understanding of the relevant theories of language and cross-cultural research.

· Improve cross-cultural awareness and communication by comparing the similarities and differences between different cultures.

· Flexible use of language for better inter-cultural communication to reduce and avoid misunderstandings.


OVERVIEW OF TYPES OF CLASSES

· The lecture (8 hours in two weeks) program will set the framework for the courses, an interactive session/seminar (4 hours) will introduce some vivid case study of real life communications across cultures, and at last the final group presentation/performance will be counted as final exam.

· Students are expected to attend all lectures, seminars and final group presentation/performance.

· Attendance records will be kept. Punctuality is essential for students.

· Students are expected to undertake self-management learning in preparation for sessions, consolidation of lecture material, coursework revision.


FURTHER INFORMATION

· All lecture references are based on the core reading materials. Students are expected to do additional background reading and research and keep up with the current trends and developments by regularly consulting relevant journals.

· Seminars will be based on reading material such as an article or case study on the previous week’s topic. Students will have seven (7) days to familiarize themselves with the subject and form the basis of an informed critical discussion and participation in seminars.

· Credit Value: 1

FINAL RESULT

· The attendance of lectures and seminars accounts for 40% of the final result.

· The final group presentation/performance (the final exam) accounts for 60% of the final result.
